URBAN ART IS NOW!
In the early 90’s, a new generation of american artists, influenced by the prevalailing underground youth subcultures of the time, such as surfing, skating, graffiti, independent music and other forms of “low” culture, began to create art that reflected their lifestyle. Most of these artists had no formal training and worked almost exclusively outside of the mainstream circuit.
The notion of ‘Urban Art’ has developed in recent years and now represents a broader cross-section of artists. Terms such as “Low Brow”, “Street Art”, “Graffiti”, “Illustration”, “Graphic Design” or “Comic Art” have fused with the classic notions of “Fine Art”, have been newly interpreted and given a whole new context.
Urban Art now reflects the huge variety of subcultural dynamics of the last 30 years. From “classic” street art to more traditional media in formal gallery spaces, Urban art deals with contemporary urban culture.
